The Memorial Day Holiday is a time to remember the sacrifices of US Service Members as well as kick off the unofficial beginning of summer. The Events Committee would like to extend a special thank you to Roger Sulhoff for putting together and sharing a wonderful Memorial Day presentation with the attendees.

The Sunday festivities began with the Memorial Day Holiday Distance Race; which brought out boats of many types. Participants were given a set start time based on a handicapping system (e.g. PHRF, Portsmouth) and set out on an identical course. What a great way to conduct a Holiday Race since it only requires one course and all participating boats are in the same fleet. 13 boats competed in the Holiday Distance Race. 12 boats finished the race (1 dropped out due to multiple mechanical failures). Congratulations to Rob Kaiser & Terry Keane for taking First Place while sailing “Flying Colors” Thanks to Liz Keenen and her RC volunteers for running a great race. The racing results will be posted soon.

The Memorial Day Cookout was held in the evening in hopes of cooler temperatures. Let’s just say that summer has officially arrived; even if only on the thermometer. The word “cooler” only refers to the place we keep the cold drinks. The extreme heat did not deter the 150+ Members and Guests who took part in the cookout. Check out some of the photo’s from this event or look back at some from past events and races.

Members & Guests CONSUMED…

3 gallons of ambrosia salad

6 gallons of watermelon punch

8 pounds of hot dog chili

20 pounds of ice for sno-cones

30 pounds of baked beans,

90 foot-long hot dogs

120 hamburgers, plus lots of appetizers, fruit, fixings, sides and desserts.

The Events Committee wants to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to all of the volunteers who took time to help in the kitchen, grilled burgers and hot dogs, put up decorations, wrote out labels, washed dishes, filled coolers, served sno-cones, ensured we had plenty of ice, and took care of all the little details that make for a successful event. Keowee Sailing Club is a great place to be when we ALL pitch in to lend a hand

WHAT’S NEXT???

If you missed the recent Holiday Distance Race, don’t fret… the next Holiday Distance Race will coincide with the Independence Day Pig Roast and the first of four Youth Races, to be held on Saturday, July 6, 2019. Please plan to attend! If you are not up to racing, come out to support the Youth sailors or participate as volunteer. There are always volunteer opportunities both on and off the water.
